COMMUNITY GARDEN....YES OR NO?

Earlier this year, a constituent emailed me about the possibility of Ripon creating a community garden. They pointed out Fond du Lac has one (I believe on the frontage road along Highway 41 near their Chamber of Commerce). The arguments for the garden were several:
* More and more people are choosing to grow their own food out of environmental or economic concerns
* There is no garden similar to the one in Fond du Lac here in Ripon
* The costs to the city would be minimal, other than preparing the land in the spring, and parceling plots

What do you think? Should this be a city goal in 2010? If so, where? I have driven around the city, and think there is land near Hillside Cemetery, where the city stores some public works vehicles and has a building. Share your ideas, and thoughts, on this possible project.
